Stratton is a charming village
with narrow streets with names like Cot Hill,Spicer's Lane,
Gibraltar Square and of course Sanctuary Lane behind the 15th
century church of St. Andrew's (40 yards from Little Sanctuary)
Stratton was once a thriving
and important market town with shops, Inn's, Magistrates Court
and cattle market
that for centuries have been serving the needs of the local
farming community and then
important fishing community.Stratton has a health centre and
cottage hospital.
Nearby Bude is an extraordinary
Cornish seaside resort that offers something for everyone.Breathtaking
cliff walks
on the Cornish coastal path, horse riding, and both sea and
fresh water fishing right in town. Beaches and surfing
are arguably the best in Cornwall and countless pubs and specialty
restaurants line the streets.
Three of the major super markets and most types of shops are
represented.
Organized shooting, fishing and hunting are available within
a 5-mile radius though the agents in town.
At the beginning of the 19th
century a canal was built from the Tamar river to the coast
for the transportation of coal,
lime and consumer goods inland and the export of sand, hides
and other agricultural produce to Ireland and Wales.
This marked the start of the now immensely popular coastal
resort of Bude, located at the canal's sea lock.
The ONLY canal lock and sea gate to the open ocean in Britain.
Today the canal is disused for commercial purposes but leisure
activities like boating, fishing, walking etc. have taken it's
place. The Victorian railway line to the seaside resort was
dismantled in 1964, but the old line is a popular cycle route.
